So, I finished watching Hemlock Grove last night. I have a lot of feelings about it, but probably most of all I gotta say I don’t understand a lot of the criticisms of this show. And I feel like a lot of what people have written about it so far is inaccurate.
For example, I read over and over again that the last episode of the first season (the only season available right now) will “leave you with more questions than answers.”
I strongly disagree with this (and will go through it later with spoilers under a cut). Basically all of the questions are answered on some level by the end of the final episode EXCEPT for the main question that is obviously going to be the setup for the next season’s plotline. And that was built slowly over the season. If you thought everything in the ENTIRE SERIES was going to be resolved in the first season then you have A. a terrible sense of what a story arc should look like and B. apparently no sense of how shows generally sustain interest in their viewers from season to season.
People got really mad about Olivia’s wandering accent. Why? Like… her character is so fucking campy, and it’s not like she’s supposed to be from straight up London or something. Part of the whole deal with her character is that, up until the VERY END, you really have no idea where she’s ACTUALLY from. You know where she’s supposed to be from but then they very explicitly have her singing in another language a few times in the series. So… yeah, she doesn’t have a perfect English accent. Why is this shocking to anyone? It makes sense with who her character is. She’s also the campiest character on the show so I dunno what you expected.
HOWEVER Roman has NO goddamn excuse for that pathetic attempt at an American accent. Jesus. I cannot even with some of his pronunciations.
I think that although the Twin Peaks influence wasn’t as present as I’d have hoped throughout the series, most of the writing can be excused because of the influence. It’s not meant to play in a hyper-realistic fashion. The dialogue isn’t trying to be real; it’s trying to be campy. It’s trying to be SURREAL.
Anyway, discussion of the last few episodes with spoilers under the cut.
New project!!
